It was a red letter day in the history of Konkani journalism on 4th of Nov. 2001. Two distinguished artistes from the Konkani literary and dramatic field received cash awards, Citation, and Man Potr from senior Konkani writer and journalist Mr. P. D’Souza in the presence of a large gathering of Konkani fraternity and well-wishers that filled entire the hall at a glittering ceremony on a specially decorated stage called Francis Fernandes Cascia Mantap at Dr. Antonio da Silva High School Hall, Dadar West, Mumbai.

The programme began at 10.30 in the morning with the arrival of senior Konkani writer Mr. P. D’Souza who was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Mr. V. D’Silva welcomed in a traditional way the large gathering which was followed by a formal welcome by Mrs. Susan Coelho. Thereafter a traditional inauguration of the days programme began with the lighting a lamp by the Chief Guest followed by J. B. Moraes, A. M. D’Souza, Gracy Serrao, Amiyar, Joe D’Souza, and the Editor Lawrence Coelho. Immediately after this a one minute silence was maintained for the souls of departed writers and artistes.

Editor of Divo Mr. Lawrence Coelho spoke about the background of Divo Sahitya Seva Puraskar 2001. He expressed his happiness of the response and support specially from the business community and declared that this practice will continue next year also.

Mr. Lawrence D’Souza Kamani, Mr. V. D’Silva, Mr. Amiyar Mumbai, Mr. Pintam Derebail, Mr. Henry D’Paula, Mr. Henry D’Silva, Mr. Joe D’Souza, Mr. S. Lobo spoke on the occassion in honour of the award winners.

Mr. Anthony Tauro, Miss Judy Pereira, Mr. Hary Boy, Mr. Victory Concesso, Miss Lola Fernandes, Mr. Charles D’Cunha, Wilfred Fernandes, Mrs. Shaila Mr. Clement Lobo, Mr. Thomas D’Souza and others entertained with their lovely songs to participants of the event in honour of the two winners.

Mr. Victor Concesso had composed a special song for the occasion which was sang by him along with Miss Lola Fernandes. and the audience appreciated it well.

Earlier Staff of Divo were given a memento by the hands of Mr. J. B. Sequeira. A few of those who have worked for the development of Divo were also given mementos in the hands Mr. Fausto D’Costa, Editor of Goan Review.

The Editor of The Secular Citizen Mr. Philip Myaboo was honoured on the occasion with a memento.

Daiji Dubai from Dubai is given a special memento on the occasion for the efforts in bringing out a grand Divo Daiji Dubai special issue which again created a history in the Konkani periodical field. Mr. J. B. Moraes gave away these mementos.

The occasion is marked with the release of a Konkani book SAVALACHER UZWAD written by Henry D’Paula

and published by Divo Publications in the hands of Mr. A. M. D’Souza.

At the main part of the Programme Chief Guest Mr. P. D’Souza together with award winners Mr. Ronald Pereira and Mrs. Molly Lobo were led to the decorated stage called Francis Ferandes Cascia Mantap. Mr. V. D’Silva read Man Potr of Ronald Pereira and Mr. Amiyar Mumbai read the Man Potr of Mrs. Molly Lobo. Senior Konkani writer gave away the cash award of Rs. 30,000 along with Man Potr and shawl with flowers and fruits. Next he gave Mrs. Molly Lobo cash award of Rs. 20,000 along with Man Potr and shawl with flowers and fruits.

Both the award winners spoke thereafter. The Chief Guest expressed great satisfaction about these awards

The programme was compared by Mr. Naveen Kulshekar, Sannu Monis and Leo Fernands.

The programme was followed by lunch with traditional taste to all the participants and invitees.

Ghattan Konachem bags first prize at drama competition

The results of the 26th Konkani drama competition organised by Kala Academy, Goa have been declared and the play Ghattan Konachem staged by Gramin Vikas Shikshan Saunstha, Valpoi has bagged the first prize for the best performance in the competition.

The play Junction Bharatpur staged by Prabhakar Saunskritik Saunstha, Kevne, Caranzaalem and Parikrana staged by Antruz Lalitak have been selected for the second and third prizes respectively. The consolation prize has been declared to Kha Mare Kha staged by Robashi Arts, Ponda.

Altogether 15 plays were staged out of the 18 entries received for the competition held from October 4 to November 1. The performances in the competition were judged by a panel consisting of Mr Upendra Timble, Mr Ajit Kerkar and Ms Maithili Thakur.

Pramod Mhadeshwar (Ghattan Konachem), Saish Deshpande (Junction Bhartpur) and Umesh Nayak (Parikrana) have been adjudged for first, second and third prizes respectively for best direction.

Prasad Pagi (Eka Gharant) and Pandurang Naik (Ghattan Konachem) have been selected for first and second prize respectively as best individual actors in male category, whereas Suchita Narvekar (Kaljachi Kani) and Nandita Narvekar (Junction Bharatpur) for first and second prize as individual actresses in the female category.

Merit certificates for acting have been awarded to Vital Nayak, Raju Mangeshkar, Uday Ghorpade, Shekhar Ujgaonkar, Prashant Satarkar, Raghunath Sancordekar, Jagdish Bhandari, Ashish Nagvekar, Hema Sinari, Vaishali Naik, Anusaya Parab, Vanita Priolkar, Shobha Kudtarkar and Rupali Naik.

Nilesh Mahale (Ghatan Konachem) has been selected for a prize and Kapil Chari (Junction Bharatpur) for merit certificate for the setting. Geeta Bambolkar (Parikrana) - best costumes, Das Kavlekar (Parikrana) - best make-up, Eknath Mahale (Ghattan Konache) - prize for best light design and Bhaskar Adivarekar (Junction Bharatpur) - certificate for light design, Satish Deshpande (Junction Bharatpur) - best background music, Shivnath Naik (Ghattan Konachem) - certificate for background music are the other winners.

The first prize for best script writing has been given to Prakash R Vazrikar (Ghattan Konachem) and second prize to Kaushik Lolyenkar (Eka Gharant).

The prizes will be awarded at a special prize distribution function and the date will be declared at a later stage.

Bennett D`Mello honoured

Abu Dhabi - 2 November 2001 - One of the  popular Mangalorean figure in the U.A.E. Mr. Bennett D'Mello was honoured by Karnataka Sangha, Abu Dhabi on Friday 2nd November 2001, at their  glittering  Rajothasava Day function held here in Abu Dhabi.

Veteran Mr. D'Mello was honoured for his achievement and contribution to the Konkani, Tulu and Kannada communities for his all-round  work associated with art, singing, dramatics, and social work.

Mr. D'Mello hails from Bijai, Mangalore is one of the most soughtt after figure in the community services in the U.A.E., with a pleasant personality, ever obliging to each and every one. 

He was honored by Mr. B. R. Shetty of  New Medical Centre Group at the Indian Social Centre, Abu Dhabi, in the presence of  a capacity crowd from all the walks of life from Karnataka based in the U.A.E.  Mr. D'Mello was presented with shawl and a memento.

Bennet is also the current Entertainment Secretary of the prestigious Konkani Cultural Organization (K.C.O.), Abu Dhabi and also an active member and ex-president  of  the Emirates Paradela -  a cultural and charitable organization based in the U.A.E.
