Konkanni Utsav at Muscat
A Konkanni festival titled "Konkanni Utsav", a cultural extravaganza, will be staged at Ruwi Parish Hall, Muscat, On 8th November, 2001. It will be staged under the banner of M.C.C.P. by 'Borpi Mitr' a Konkanni Writers' forum which came into existence a year ago at Muscat. 

The members of 'Borpi Mitr' are multi-talented. Besides being prolific writers in Konkanni, they are lively stage actors, accomplished singers and hilarious comedians. To commemorate the anniversary of their association, these budding artistes have pooled their local talents and are making their maiden cultural debut filled with fun and frolic, music and dance, jokes and comics, skit and poetry !

Well known Konkanni singers and composers Shri Allan Fernandes and Shri Gerry D'Mello will enthrall the Konkanni Music lovers with their swinging, tilting and enchanting songs. Oman's No.1 Konkanni choreographer Smt.Sonia D'Souza will present her colourful and heart-elevating folk dances on the occasion. Konkan's popular comedians Shri Walter Mendonca & Shri Walter Pinto are ready with ribs tickling jokes. There will also be Konkanni poetry recitation by the Konkan's celebrated poets Shri Anil Pernal and Shri Wilfred R. Pangla. The whole show will be compered by none other than the noted Konkanni writer and convener of 'Borpi Mitr' Shri Clarence Kaikamba !.

The 'Konkanni Utsav' will be a veritable feast to the ears, eyes and minds of Konkanni lovers. It will be an unique experience one cannot afford to miss !

WOMEN'S AWARENESS DAY CELEBRATION

Kasargod, October 20: In bringing up future leaders in our societies, and in making them perfect human beings, women's responsibility is supreme said Canara Organization for Developement and Peace (C.O.D.P.) secretary Fr. Faustine Lobo, who was the chief guest for Women's Awareness Day Celebration. All women should bring their power and strength together in getting united them towards this goal. Women's Awareness Day Celebration should bring enthusiasm in women. 

In Kasargod region women had very little co-operation and leadership towards this goal of unity. Local leaders and C.O.D.P. gave a boost to this movement and now we have a strong Women's Movement. This model association should spread their wings towards Bantwal Taluk also said Bantwal Region's Fr. Peter Noronha in his message to the attendees. 

Mangalore Diocese Women's Organization president Smt. Lilly Pereira presided over the function. Women in the villages should unite together in building a strong unity between them she said and praised their steps towards this goal.

Abu Dhabi Oct.19: "We are all set to take off " said Mr. Leo Rodrigues the newly elected charismatic K.C.O. President during a informal discussion with daijidubai.com on Satarday, 20th October 2001.  Konkanni Cultural Organization one of the leading Konkanni organizations in the gulf had seen in the past various stages of formation right from its restructuring in Feb. 1994.

"We have always contributed towards worthy causes whenever we felt a need to support, it may have been in the form of donation to C.O.D.P. or various social projects for the like." However he explained " In the change of world around us we have realized that identifying a needy person in our society and helping cause is imminent. Plans are on to raise finances by venturing into a social & cultural programme". He solicited the support of people  of Emirates apart from ever willing well wishers of Abu Dhabi.  He also praised outgoing President Mr. Dolphy Vaz who has done a wonderful job during his tenure.

ChristianLeaders' Seminar

Mangalore, October19:  Central Committee of Catholic Sabha organized their Christian Leaders' Seminar today.  Karnataka State's retired Chief Director of Police Shri F. T. R.Colaco was the guest of honour.  True and good leaders in the society should come forward and take part in active politics said Shri Colaco in his speech.  Corruption is filled in our society and selecting good, true politicians should eliminate this, he said.  Catholic Sabha's central president Shri Alphonso D'Costa welcomed the gathering. Director Fr. Walter D'Mello gave invocation and program co-ordinator and past central committee president Shri Gerald D'Costa introduced the guests and gave introduction for today's seminar. One of the guests, Congress District President Shri Blasius M. D'Souza explained entrance in politics and serving community needs.  Mangalore Diocese Vicar General Msgr. Fred V. Pereira appreciated Catholic Sabha's activities and prayed that people will get some profit out of the

Mr. Leo Rodrigues- New K.C.O.  President
 
Mr. Leo Rodrigues, was elected as President of Konkani Cultural Organization (K.C.O.) , Abu Dhabi, during  the Annual General Body meeting held in Abu Dhabi on Friday, 19 October 2001.

 Mr. Leo Rodrigues, takes over from veteran Mr. Dolphy Vaz, who was the president of K.C.O. since the last two years.  Under the leadership of  Mr. Vaz,  K.C.O.  was instrumental in organizing the visit of  his lordship Bishop of Mangalore to U.A.E. 

 Mr. Leo Rodrigues was the founder member of  K.C.O. and  who has  also been the President of K.C.O. twice before, has vast experience and under his leadership, K.C.O.  is expected to  organize their planned  social and charitable projects which are in the pipeline. 

 Mrs. Leena Fernandes  and Mr. Franklin D’Cunha were also  elected as General Secretary and Treasurer respectively during the same meeting.

Margaret Alva, M.P. Seeks Christian Representation in State Ministry

BANGALORE, Oct 18  Senior Congress leader and MP Margaret Alva today observed that there was a need to provide representation to Christian community in the state ministry.

Speaking to reporters here today, she said there was no justification for not giving any representation to the Christian community in the State ministry. “Christians should be given representation. But who should be inducted into the ministry is purely a prerogative of the chief minister,” she said while answering a query.
