Doha: An Evening with Wilfy Rebimbus
Eddi Sequira Honored

IT was indeed a memorable day for the Konkani-speaking
Mangaloreans of
Doha. The gala evening of Konkani Melodies and Comedies by
Wilfy Rebimbus
and his troupe at the Al Ghazal Club on 19th October, 2001 was a
run-away
success. The Wilfy Nite was organised by the Mangalore Cricket
Club (MCC).
For the last 10 years or so, Wilfy has presented several Nites
in Doha and
arguably, this show was one of the best. The audience was
enthralled by the
balanced mix of old melodies and some of Wilfys latest songs.
When on
Philomena, the audience were taken back down memory lane to
the late 60s,
when at every gathering, this song was a must.
The dances were excellent. Sudhi and Jyothi, along with local
talents
Joylin, Sneha and Rekha, performed like true professionals.
Both the timing
and rhythm were perfect. Hats off to the choreographer. The
audiences
exploded into roaring applause at the end of each episode.
The jokes were intelligently woven around day-to-day events.
No wonder, the
inimitable Dolla has been crowned as the King of Comedies.
Eddie Sequeira did a superb job as the master of ceremony. A
versatile
Konkani artist, playwright, actor, director and poet, Sequeira
was the
recipient of 2001 Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award for the best
play
published in 1998-2001. The MCC honoured him for his
contribution to the
Konkani culture.
The MCC also honoured a group of children, including Jackson
Mendonca,
Nandita Aranha, Cinderella Williams, Nelisha Kiren Monteiro,
Liason Rostan
Pais and Varun DSouza, for their achievement in studies,
sports and other
activities.
Besides Wilfy, the show featured his wife Meena, son Vishwas
and long-time
associates Prem Kumar, Claud DSouza and Sandria. Doha
residents Vivian
DSouza and Donny Patrao ably supported comedians Dolla and
Claud.
Dr Ashok Amrohi, Counsellor at the Indian embassy, was the
chief guest.
Wilfy, who has won several awards, has become a cult figure
among the
Konkani-speaking Mangaloreans.
